The holidays are here, a festive and joyful time of the year. As we prepare to make merry, gather with friends and family, trim the tree, finalize our shopping, complete our holiday baking and plan for our holiday parties, don’t forget to squeeze in a little exercise whenever possible. Staying as active as you can, even during the busiest time of year, will help you maintain balance and keep you healthy in the new year.
It is not always easy to prioritize exercise. It is even more challenging to do so during the holidays. As much as we would like to, getting in a workout might not be possible and that’s okay. When your schedule gets too busy, think about how you can use those spare minutes to modify your exercise program.
How do we get in some exercise during the holidays? If 15 minutes is all the time you have, try doing some isometric exercises, like sit-ups or push-ups. A quick routine of squats, lunges, jumping jacks and stretches can be done just about anywhere. Invite your family members for a walk—an excellent opportunity to be social while staying active. If you plan to travel, take your resistance bands with you. In other words, you might have to get creative with your activity.
Studies have shown that doing short bouts of high-intensity exercise may be enough to maintain your fitness level. Certainly, any activity you can do will help you manage the stress of the season. So, don’t worry if you can’t get in that five-mile run. Do what you can when you can. Mini-workouts work! Enjoy the holidays.
