Ready, Get Set, Run!

Corpus Christi Gym Offers Running Tips for Beginners

If you’re looking for a simple, straightforward workout, try running! It’s about as basic as you can get, and it’s one activity that burns calories, strengthens your cardiovascular system, tones muscles, and reduces stress. Aside from improving your health and physical fitness, running is a mood-booster that helps clear and refocus your mind. Now that’s a great workout!

If you like the idea but don’t know where to start, Freedom Fitness has a few tips for beginning runners. The most important? Make the commitment and stick to it!

Just Get Moving. Period.

Your mindset, as you approach the idea, is half the battle. It can be hard at first, especially if you’re not accustomed to running, but as your muscles and joints acclimate to the new routine, you’ll soon begin to enjoy the freedom that running provides. Stick with it, even when the going seems tough.

And when you can’t run outdoors, treadmills are a great substitute when weather is stormy or too hot and humid. (There’s a lot to be said for the climate-controlled comfort of our Corpus Christi gyms, especially during our Texas summers)!

Where to Begin

As the Cleveland Clinic mentions, knowing where to start — and starting slowly — helps get your running program off the ground the right way. Keep these tips in mind.

Make Sure You Have the Right Shoes. It all starts here. Wearing the right shoes prevents injury, muscle strain, and fatigue — and you’ll probably enjoy your run much more if your feet are comfortable. Visit a sporting goods store or seek recommendations from other runners who can advise you on the shoe that offers the best fit, support, and comfort.

Walk First. New to running? Don’t overwhelm your body. Start slowly, even if it means walking or run/walking at first. We know you’re excited to get going, but it’s important to work up to running longer distances. Start by gauging your time, not the distance, and gradually increase the amount of time you run. Taking on too much at first puts you at risk for injury or disappointment (if you wear out too quickly), so start with achievable goals and watch yourself succeed!

S-T-R-E-T-C-H. Stretching is key for any physical fitness routine, especially running. Targeted exercises keeps muscles loose for improved range of motion, and helps prepare them for the activity ahead. Stretching after a run also helps muscles cool down and allows your heart to return to its normal resting rate.

A personal trainer can coach you with the best stretches and exercises to keep you limber and injury-free.

Stay Fueled, Hydrated and Comfortable. It goes without saying that runners should dress in attire that is non-restrictive and appropriate to the weather. You’ll be losing a lot of fluids and essential minerals (like sodium and potassium), so it’s crucial to consume enough water and/or sports beverages, to replace what you’re sweating out.

Be Ready.

To ensure your body is in the best shape it can be, especially if your goal is to tackle lengthy marathons, alternate your running days with strength training or a group class at our Corpus Christi health clubs. You’ll also find amenities to help you recharge, like Smoothie King and hydromassage beds, to soothe and refresh your muscles

Running is one of the best cardio exercises out there, and the health and wellness benefits are many. Starting a running program takes a little preparation, but you’ll ultimately feel such amazing achievement!
