Your Guide to a Healthy Summer Workout

Hello, fellow fitness enthusiasts! As we step into the scorching month of August, it’s crucial that we address an often-overlooked aspect of our workout routines – hydration. Especially for those of us in Texas where temperatures can soar, staying hydrated isn’t just about quenching your thirst; it’s a matter of health and safety too.

Heat-related illnesses are no joke. They can range from mild conditions like heat exhaustion to severe ones like heat stroke. The latter can be life-threatening and is caused when the body’s temperature rises and is unable to cool down.

Even if you’re exercising in one of our air-conditioned gyms in Corpus Christi, the summer heat can still impact your health. The body can still get dehydrated from sweating, and going in and out of different temperature extremes can also put stress on your body.

So how can you continue your workouts safely in this intense heat? Here are some tips:

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

We can’t stress this enough! Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink up because thirst is a sign that you’re already dehydrated. An easy way to check your hydration level is by looking at your urine. If it’s light yellow, you’re good to go. Dark yellow? Drink more water!

Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Try to schedule your outdoor workouts early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. The sun’s peak hours are typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so avoid outside activities during that time if possible. Or better yet, get a gym membership and bring your exercise indoors!

Dress Appropriately

Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing to help keep cool.

Listen to Your Body

If you feel dizzy, faint, or nauseous, stop exercising immediately and alert someone near you. These could be signs of a heat-related illness.

Remember, there’s no harm in modifying your workout routine or taking a break when the heat gets too intense. Your safety and health always come first. So, let’s beat the heat, Texas-style, and keep our workouts safe and effective this August!
